Endovenous Laser Treatment

Endovenous laser treatment is quickly taking its place as the premium treatment of varicose veins. Endovenous laser treatment uses a highly concentrated beam of light.  These lasers work by delivering extremely precise light energy directly to the targeted tissue, so as not to affect or damage any surrounding tissue. Lasers have been proven to be extremely effective through many years of use in all different types of procedures, from eye surgery to dermatology. Lasers offer far less risk for complications than conventional surgery, especially when used by a skilled surgeon.

The EVLT process uses a thin fiber, which is inserted into the damaged vein through a tiny skin entry point.  A laser is then emitted through the inserted fiber and the fiber is retracted through the affected vein, delivering the correct amount of energy, reacting with the light energy and causing the vein to close off and seal.  These closed off veins are superficial veins and handle less than five percent of the blood flow to the body.  The body naturally then routes blood to other, healthier veins.

Here’s what to expect from the EVLT procedure:

· Your doctor uses ultrasound to map out your vein.
· Local anesthetic is applied.
· A thin laser fiber is inserted through a tiny entry point, usually near the knee.
· Laser energy is delivered to seal the faulty vein.
· Walking immediately after the procedure is encouraged. Normal daily activity can be resumed; just avoid rigorous activities such as running and gym workouts for 24-48 hours.  Other low impact exercise is fine.
· There may be minor soreness and bruising. Any discomfort can be treated with over-the-counter, non-aspirin pain relievers as necessary.

The procedure is minimally invasive and requires no general anesthesia. Only local anesthetic is used to numb the area where the physician is working. Patients are encouraged to walk immediately after the procedure and can resume normal activities the same day.

Our EVLT system uses targeted laser energy to seal the vein shut and help you look and feel better fast.
